Enquiry: Mike Set

I recently picked up an old Horn Gramophone at an auction sale. I believe it is junior Monarch and was produced by HMV - (The Gramophone Company). The mechanism is made in Switzerland, (THORENS Fabrication Suisse No.535) It is in working condition.

However, one of the three-piece links and weight on the governor has broken away and don’t know where I can get a replacement part. Can you give any help or advice with this problem?

Yours sincerely.

This is unlikely to be an HNV gramophone; no gramophone ever left the HMV factory with a Thorens motor, so either the motor has been replaced or, more likely, it is not an HMV machine. As for the governor probelm, I am not quite clear where it is broken; 'three-piece-link' sounds like the arrangement for mounting the governor weights in some Collaro motors, but I have never seen this on a Thorens, which would normally have the weights on simple flat springs. Normally, in replacing these, it is necessary to replace all three springs in order to maintain balance.

To add to Christopher's comments I suggest you send a photo of the damaged parts to either Ken Priestley (www.fonograf.talktalk.net) or John Sleep (www.windupgram.co.uk) who should be able to help with parts or fix the motor for you.
