Centenary Cylinders

To commemorate the centenary of the Society two cylinders have been recorded.  These are two minute records, made exclusively for the CLPGS by the Vulcan Phonograph Cylinder Record Co in an indestructible resin formula which is unbreakable in normal use. These cylinders are priced at £30.00 including worldwide postage.

Duet for Two Cats - Duetto Buffo di Due Gatti (attrib. Gioacchino Rossini): 100-1
Our first newly recorded two-minute (100tpi) cylinder, sung by Sarah Tenant-Flowers and Abi Turner of the vocal group, Papagena, accompanied by Simon Heighes on the piano.

A novelty piece, made famous by Elizabeth Schwarzkopf and Victoria de Los Angeles, the Duet gently pokes fun at opera’s sometimes over extravagant coloratura and also, of course, of the legendary cattiness of Prima Donnas. As far as we know this is the first time the duet has been recorded on cylinder.​

Moses and the Children of Israel (George Frideric Handel): 100-2
Sung by the Keble College Choir, Oxford under their conductor Mathew Martin, our second newly recorded two-minute cylinder recreates one of the earliest still surviving recordings made during an actual performance at the Handel Festival held in the Crystal Palace, London in 1888. Using smaller forces than the 4000-member choir recorded at the Crystal Palace, we have recreated the music, which is barely audible on the original cylinder, in an arrangement that can be listened to with pleasure again and again.
